NOTE: Because of the poor air quality, the walk has been cancelled. We plan to do the walk again when Stan’s schedule permits. Stay safe, and hope to see you on the paths when the air is clear!

The City of Oakland has also issued a Red Flag Warning for the Oakland hills, so Joaquin Miller Park is officially closed until 11PM Saturday.

Join Oakland Urban Paths as Stan Dodson of the Oakland Trails program leads us on a less ‘urban’ path in Oakland, from the Dimond district up the Sausal Creek watershed to Joaquin Miller Park and Chabot Space and Science Center. The return is by AC Transit bus.

The walk will begin at 10AM from the parking lot behind La Farine bakery on Fruitvale. You’ll have the option of returning after 4.5 miles (meadow), 5.5 miles (Chabot Space and Science Center) or 7.5 miles (Joaquin Miller Abbey). The 5.5 mile option is about 2.5 hours, including the 10-12 minute return by bus. The first two options are mostly uphill with the downhill by bus.

Donations are optional, but will go to support the work of the all-volunteer Oakland Trails programs, which include trail maintenance and park patrols.

As always, bring water, good walking/hiking shoes and a hat/sunscreen as needed. Also bring bus fare ($2.25) or a Clipper Card for the return by AC Transit.

Read about a similar hike (to the 5.5 mile point) last year.

    • The hike involves a fair amount of climbing, but it’s spread over a distance so none of it is too steep. The start is at about 200′ above sea level; the highest point (Chabot Space and Science Center) is about 1500′.

    • Unless things take a dramatic turn for the worse, the walk will go on. But people should assess the air quality for their particular situation. What’s OK for some may not be OK for others.
