Cleveland Cascade

Join us for a study in contrasts between four different urban stairways in four different states of access. We’ll also explore where the F.M. “Borax” Smith estate was, see a house that was owned by Henry J. Kaiser, and more.

The walk starts at the bottom of the Cleveland Cascade on Lakeshore Avenue. Here’s a map of our route. This 3 mile walk includes several stairways and hills.

  • A moderate walk, some stairs and lots of history.
  • Heavy rain cancels, light rain OK
  • Dogs OK!

  1. I’m a fairly new resident of Oakland and am enjoying getting to know the city and beyond. I have been on 3 walks with Urban Paths. So much history – I’m amazed! Thank you for the time spent and your passion for the city. I am truly enjoying getting to know Oakland from all points of view.

  2. I’ve been out of state and missed the last few months so I’m very excited to be able to go on this walk.
Thank you Gene and everyone else who makes these walks possible.

  3. I grew up in this neighborhood on Radnor Road, in a house my Dad moved into at age 5. I left Oakland for college and haven’t lived there since, but enjoy reading about and seeing what is going on. I took those stairs all the time to and from the library! Grew up sailing on Lake Merritt; loved the tidbit about Lake Merritt being the first wildlife preserve in the US. Keep up with the interesting facts, I love it and share it with my 95 year old Mom.
