Join us for a study in contrasts between four different urban stairways in four different states of access. We’ll also explore where the F.M. “Borax” Smith estate was, see a house that was owned by Henry J. Kaiser, and more.

The walk starts at the bottom of the Cleveland Cascade on Lakeshore Avenue. This 3 mile walk includes several stairways and hills.

  • A moderate walk, some stairs and lots of history.
  • Heavy rain cancels, light rain OK
  • Dogs OK!

As always, bring water, a hat and/or sunscreen as needed. Lakeshore is served by AC Transit, and various bus lines come nearby on Grand or MacArthur. See 511.org for transit info.

  1. Dear Gene, Will you be hosting this venture ? I would like to meet you sometime!!! Yes I would like to attend. One note, is Cleveland cascade off of Lakeshore ? I don’t remember that street?? So count me in on 1/13/at 10:30…Dennis from the Cypress st projects, so looking forward to the experience !!!

    • I will be leading the walk. Note that the start time is 10:00AM, not 10:30AM. It will finish at about 12:30PM. The Cleveland Cascade is between Lakeshore Ave. and Merritt Ave., just south of the Pergola at Lake Merritt and Our Lady of Lourdes Church. If you plan to attend, be sure to sign up on Eventbrite so we have an idea of how many people to expect.

  2. Eventbrite says the event is “sold out.” Does this mean that you have your max capacity of walkers? If so but there is a wait list, i’d love to be put on it in case there are some cancellations. Many thanks!
